Developed by Perth yogini Tanaya Ti’en over two decades of exploration into the heart of Raja Yoga, the Chakras, and various movement forms - from Vinyasa Yoga, Physical Theatre and Dance, to Tai Chi, Pilates, Feldenkrais, Alexander technique, and Meridian Practice - this ten class journey is designed to Rock & Align Your Chakras, and unleash the most magnificent version of you!

Over 10 classes & 10 weeks we explore, understand and embody some of the jewels of Raja yoga, aka ‘Classical Yoga’ or the ‘Royal Yoga’. Raja yoga is a lineage or school of yoga, rather than a style. It encompasses Hatha (or postural yoga) but is not limited to it, offering us other practical tools including breath techniques, and ethical practices that we can take off our mats and weave into everything we do.

Over 10 classes, we dive heart first into the first two limbs of Raja Yoga, the Yamas & Niyamas, interwoven with a guided soundscape and flow of yoga inspired movement encompassing the most ancient system of subtle energy - the Chakras.

Simply put, the Yamas & Niyamas are a set of ten yogi precepts - comparative to the Christian & Jewish Ten Commandments, or the Ten Virtues of Buddhism. They are like a map written to guide us on our life's journey. They represent yoga's ethical practice, and offer a powerful and effective set of tools that can be utilised on and off the mat. The ‘Yamas' are things not to do - when, where and how to practice restraint, while the ‘Niyamas’ are things to do - observances that can assist us in fulfilling our greatest potential. These ten jewels, if understood and practiced, may well be the most rewarding adventure we ever embark upon. Non-violence, Truthfulness, Non-Stealing, Moderation, Non-Attachment, Purity, Contentment, Self-Discipline, Self-Study and Surrender; the secret ingredients to a well-rounded practice, and a bountiful life.

The 7 Chakras are energy centres that run the length of our spine, connecting with different aspects and elements of our body and being. As each Yama & Niyama carries its own energy and focus, each one bares a special connection to one or more of the chakras. In this ten class series we explore some of those connections, delving into the philosophy of the first two limbs of yoga amidst a correlating flow of chakra specific yoga postures.
In developing an understanding of what each chakra represents, combined with the teachings of the Yamas and Niyamas, blockages can be cleared, and our life-force energy revitalised. We feel more balanced, equanimous, and in general more at one with ourselves and the world around us. Our lives begin to flow, and we begin to flow more in our lives, regardless of our circumstances.

For the keen yogi, particularly if a postural practice is the primary focus, it is helpful to note that in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, there are sixteen sutras (II:30-45) devoted to the Yamas & Niyamas, making the first two limbs the most highly revered aspect of the entire text. In this light, we could say that without at least a willingness to understand and work with these principles, our practice becomes one dimensional.

This ten week class series has been composed in a present-day context for quick and easy access to an age-old wisdom. Each class is a self-contained journey, offering a pearl of yogic wisdom amidst a liberating and juicy flow of chakra specific movement, followed by a guided relaxation, so if you can't make all ten classes, class-to-class attendance is most welcomed.
